\textit{A. Neeman} introduced the class of well generated triangulated categories [``Triangulated categories'', Ann. Math. Stud. 148 (2001; Zbl 0974.18008)]. In the paper under review a shorter and equivalent definition is given. A triangulated category with coproducts is well generated if and only if there is a set \({\mathcal S}_0\) of objects so that the following three conditions hold. Firstly, the zero object is the only object \(X\) so that all morphisms from any object of \({\mathcal S}_0\) to \(X\) are zero. Secondly, for any set of morphisms \(X_i\) to \(Y_i\) so that any induced map \((S,X_i)\) to \((S,Y_i)\) is surjective for any object \(S\) in \({\mathcal S}_0\), then \((S,\coprod_i X_i) \to(S, \coprod_i Y_i)\) is surjective. Thirdly, there is a cardinal \(\alpha\) so that any morphism from \(S\) to a coproduct \(\coprod_{i\in I}X_i\) factors through a coproduct \(\coprod_{i\in J} X_i\) where \(J\) is a subset of \(I\) of cardinality smaller than \(\alpha\).
