The authors present a general approach to the discrete-time AAK problem for finite-dimensional descriptor systems. Written in simple mathematical terminology, they want to characterize those rational \(S\) with \(r\) poles outside the unit disc such that \(\left\|\left[\begin{smallmatrix} T_{11}+ S &T_{12}\\ T_{21} & T_{22}\end{smallmatrix}\right]\right\|_\infty\) is less than \(\gamma\), where \(T_{ij}\) is rational and \(\|\cdot\|_\infty\) denotes the supremum-norm on the unit circle. They solve this problem via a combination of state- and frequency-domain techniques. As may be expected from simpler versions of this problem, the solutions, \(S\), can be constructed using two Riccati equations.
