Let \(X\) be an infinite dimensional Banach space with closed unit ball \(B\). The ``minimal displacement problem'' asks for the value \(d(T)=\inf\{\|x-Tx\||\;x\in B\}\) for a mapping \(T:B\to B\) or, more generally, for \(d(\mathcal{T}):=\sup\{d(T)|\;T\in\mathcal{T}\}\) for a set \(\mathcal{T}\) of mappings \(B\to B\). The author reviews several results on the minimal displacement problem and poses a lot of open problems. Moreover, he discusses the relation with the problem of finding the optimal Lipschitz constant for a Lipschitz retraction \(B\to S\) onto the unit sphere.
