The authors study the existence of solutions to Volterra integral equations of the form \[ u(t) = \int_0^t f(t,s,u(s)) ds, \quad t\in [0,T], \] and to the corresponding Urysohn integral equations \[ u(t) = \int_0^T f(t,s,u(s)) ds, \quad t\in [0,T], \] in some Banach space. The kernel is assumed to satisfy certain Carathéodory type conditions and in the case of the Volterra equation it is assumed that \(\alpha(f(t,s,M))\leq \omega (t,s,\alpha(M))\) where \(\alpha\) is a measure of noncompactness and \(\omega\) is such that that \(\varphi=0\) is the only solution to the equation \(\varphi(t) \leq \int_0^t \omega(t,s,\varphi(s)) ds\). Furthermore it is assumed that for some \(R\) one has \(\sup_{t\in [0,T]} |u(t)|< R\) for every solution to \(u(t) = \lambda \int_0^t f(t,s,u(s)) ds \), \(0< \lambda < 1\) such that \(|u(t)|\leq R\) for \(t\in [0,T]\).
