Consider the integral elements \(\alpha\) of a real quadratic algebra \({\mathcal A}\) of dimension \(s\geq 3\). Let \(A(x)\) denote the number of squares \(\alpha^2\) where all \(s\) components of \(\alpha^2\) are lying in the interval \([-X,X]\). The author proves the asymptotic formula \[ A(x)= cX^{5/2}- dX^{(s-1)/2}+ O(X(\log X)^{-1/2})+ O(X^{(s-2)/2} \delta(X)), \] where \(c\) and \(d\) are certain positive constants depending on \(s\), and \(\delta(X)\) is any upper bound of the error term in the divisor problem. We can put \(\delta(X)= X^{23/72+ \varepsilon}\). This generalizes former results from \textit{H. Müller} and \textit{W. G. Nowak} [Mitt. Math. Ges. Hamb. 18, 119-126 (1999; Zbl 1027.11073)] and the author [Acta Arith. 93, 359-372 (2000; Zbl 0947.11028)].
