The universal approach, which is often used in problems with singularities, encounters algorithmic and computational difficulties if the degree of degeneration is close to some critical value. One has to deal with a resulting system of linear algebraic equations that proves to be ill-conditioned. This paper deals with a numerical method for degenerate equations in which the solution \(u(x)\) is represented in the boundary layer region in the form of a product \(\sigma(x)\). \(\varphi(x)\), where the function \(\sigma(x)\) is constructed with the use of the coefficients of the degenerate differential operator and takes account of the asymptotic of the solution in a neighborhood of the degeneration points and \(\varphi(x)\) is much more suitable for finite element approximation than \(u(x)\).
