Let \(G\) be a Lie group and \(X\) a simply-connected \(G\)-manifold. Assume that \(X\) is homogeneous under the \(G\)-action. A manifold \(M\) is said to admit a ``\((X,G)\)-structure'' if \(M\) is locally modeled on \(X\). This is equivalent to the property that there is a \textit{representation} \(\rho:\pi_1(M)\to G\) and a ``\textit{developing map}'' \(\Phi:\tilde M\to X\) which is \(\pi_1(M)\)-equivariant with respect to \(\rho\). Such a \((X,G)\)-structure is called ``\textit{homogeneous}'' if the group of all automorphisms of \(M\) compatible with these data acts transitively on \(M\). In this case the image \(\Phi(\tilde M)\) is the open orbit of a subgroup of \(G\) in \(X\). In this way the study of \((X,G)\)-structures is related to the study of open orbits in \(X\). The article under review explains this connection to motivate its study of open orbits in a particular homogeneous space. This particular space is \(\text{SO}(2n)/\text{U}(n)\) which may also be realized as quotient of \(\text{SO}(2n,{\mathbb{C}})\) by a parabolic subgroup \(P\) and furthermore may be interpreted as the space of orthogonal complex structures on \({\mathbb{R}}^{2n}\). The article gives an explicit classification of open orbits of maximal reducible and maximal irreducible non-simple subgroups of \(\text{SO}(2n,{\mathbb{C}})\) in this homogeneous space \(\text{SO}(2n,{\mathbb{C}})/P\).
