The authors propose a solution to the first part of the problem No. 899 of \textit{G. West} [see \textit{J. van Mill} and \textit{G. M. Reed} (eds.), Open problems in topology (1990; Zbl 0718.54001)]. They prove that the Banach-Mazur compact \(Q(n)\) is an absolute retractor. In this case \(Q(n)\) is a set of classes of isometries of the \(n\)-dimensional Banach space topologized by the metric \[ d(E,F) = \ln\inf\{\|T\|\cdot\|T^{-1}\|\mid T: E\to F\text{ is an isomorphism}\} . \]
