Let \(M\) be an \(n\)-dimensional manifold and \(\varphi: M\rightarrow {\mathbb R}^{n+1}\) be an isometric immersion. The immersed hypersurface \(M\) is called finitely connected (in this paper) if there is a finite number of connected components of \(\varphi^{-1}(B_x(t))\) for any \(x\in {\mathbb R}^{n+1}\) and any \(t>0, \) where \(B_x(t)\) denotes a ball of the Euclidean distance \(t\) centered at \(x.\) The author considers a finitely connected stable minimal hypersurface \(M\) immersed in \({\mathbb R}^4\) or in \({\mathbb R}^5\) and gives a pointwise estimate of the size of the second fundamental form of \(M\) in terms of the extrinsic distance from the point considered to the boundary of \(M.\) Using this estimate he then proves that any finitely connected, properly immersed, connected and complete stable minimal hypersurface in \({\mathbb R}^4 \) or in \({\mathbb R}^5\) is a hyperplane. The same theorem holds for complete stable minimal surfaces in \({\mathbb R}^3\) without finite connectedness assumption [see \textit{M. Do Carmo} and \textit{C. K. Peng}, Bull. Am. Math. Soc. 1, 903-906 (1979; Zbl 0442.53013) and \textit{D. Fischer-Colbrie} and \textit{R. Schoen}, Commun. Pure Appl. Math. 33, 199-211 (1980; Zbl 0439.53060)].
