The study concerns control problems with observers and a separation principle in Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy models. The class of T-S models under consideration assumes the following form (both continuous and discrete-time versions of the model are considered) \[ \text{-if }s_1\text{ is } M_{1i}\text{ and\dots and }s_g\text{ is }M_{pi}\text{ then }dx/dt= A_ix (t)+ B_i u(t),\;y(t)= C_ix(t) \] (in the above \(x(t)\in \mathbb{R}^n\) is a state vector, \(u(t) \in \mathbb{R}^m\) denotes an input vector and \(y(t)\in \mathbb{R}^q\) is the output vector, \(i=1,2, \dots,r\), while \(M_{1i},\dots, M_{pi}\) are fuzzy sets contained in the condition part of the rule and defined for some measurable system variables). It is shown how to develop a fuzzy reduced-order observer. Then this construction is related to a general structure of the fuzzy observer. The authors propose a fuzzy functional observer that is aimed at the estimation of the fuzzy feedback control instead of the estimation of the fuzzy state itself. Finally, a separation principle is revisited in the context of fuzzy models and control for the classes of the fuzzy observers under study.
