The purpose of this paper is to prove the so-called ``Prime Number Theorem'' for a convex co-compact hyperbolic manifold of the type \(\Gamma\setminus \mathbb{H}^{n+1}\) where \(\mathbb{H}^{n+1}\) denotes the standard simply connected manifold of constant sectional curvatures \(-1\). This is proved by relating the logarithmic derivative of the Selberg zeta-function to a regularized trace of the resolvent kernel. Enough is known about the poles of the resolvent kernel in order to conclude that the only pole on the abscissa of convergence is on the real axis, and that this is simple. Thus it is necessary to determine the residue. If the exponent of convergence \(\delta(\Gamma)\) is greater than \(n/2\) then it is quite easy to determine this residue by \(L^2\)-methods. The main point of this paper is to show how scattering theory can be used to prove the same result when \(\delta(\Gamma)< n/2\). Given this fact the assertion follows by the usual methods.
