Let \(\eta_{t}\) be a finite range contact process; suppose that \(\eta_{t}\) is supercritical, i.e., the probability that \(\sum_{x\in\mathbb Z} \eta_{t}(x)>0\) for all \(t>0\), given \(\eta_0(\cdot)=\mathbf 1_{\{0\}}\), is positive. Denote by \(r_{t}\) the rightmost particle, \(r_{t} = \sup\{x; \eta_{t}(x)=1\}\). It is known that there exists an \(\alpha\in\mathbb R\) such that \(\alpha = \lim_{t\to\infty} t^{-1}r_{t}\) almost surely, when the initial configuration is \(1\) on \(\mathopen]-\infty,0\mathclose]\) and \(0\) on \(\mathopen]0,\infty\mathclose[\). It is shown that the process \(r_{t}\) satisfies a central limit theorem: in the Skorokhod topology, \(\lim_{N\to\infty} N^{-1/2}( r_{Nt}-\alpha Nt) = B(t)\) in distribution, where \(B\) is a (nonstandard) Wiener process. The proof is based on a generalization of an argument due to \textit{T. Kuczek} [Ann. Probab. 17, No. 4, 1322-1332 (1989; Zbl 0694.60092)] in the case of the nearest neighbour contact process.
