The Cauchy problem is considered for hyperbolic relaxation systems of the form \(u_t+v_x=0\), \(v_t+au_x =f(u)-v\). Large time behavior of the solution is investigated for certain class of initial data (in a sense complementary to traveling wave solutions). The solution is shown to converge to relaxation rarefaction profiles at a determined asymptotic rate. The result is established without the smallness conditions on the wave strength and the initial disturbances.
