Let \(X\) be a compact Riemann surface of genus \(g\geq 2\), \(B_j\) finite subsets of \(X\) with order \(k_j\) and \(G\subset\Aut X\) a subgroup of the automorphism group \(\Aut X\) leaving \(B_j\) invariant. In this note upper bounds for the order of \(G\) are given. The main results are: If \(GB_j=B_j\) for \(j=1,2\), then \(|G|\leq 8(g-1)+ k_1+4k_2\). If \(GB_j=B_j\) for \(j=1,2,3\), then \(|G|\leq 2(g-1)+ k_1+k_2+k_3\). These results are also applied to sets of Weierstrass points, branch loci of branched coverings and to singular fiber loci of pencils of curves.
