The authors show that in any normed plane with unit disc being a polygon, every set of \(n\) points has a Steiner minimum tree such that all Steiner points belong to an \((n-2)\)-level grid. This is a generalization of a result of Du and Hwang (1992) for the hexagon and a result of Lee and Shen (1996). The same result was independently obtained by Lin and Xue (1999) using a different approach.
