The book is devoted to explaining deeply, in theory and practice, two fundamental fields of fuzzy theory: fuzzy modeling and fuzzy control. Janusz Kacprzyk (another leader of the fuzzy world research) says that ``The present book is probably the most comprehensive coverage of fuzzy modeling and control in the literature.'' To cite again J. Kacprzyk, ``in my opinion this is an extraordinary books, like almost no ones in the literature. It gives a great, comprehensive coverage of fuzzy modeling and control, written in a manner that is both understandable and acceptable by the control community\dots Professor Piegat deserves thanks and appreciation of the whole fuzzy community for writing such an exceptional books\dots''. Every word of these statements I considered to be true and any other comments are pointless. Coming to the contents description, the book is made up of eight substantial chapters: After the introductory Chapter 1, Chapter 2 defines the basic notions of fuzzy set theory: fuzzy sets, indices of a fuzzy set, linguistic modifiers, types of membership functions, type 2 fuzzy sets, and a short comparison between fuzziness and probability, all with numerous examples. Actually, it is worth to mention a general and outstanding characteristic throughout the book: practically all the important notions and results are accompanied by various examples, exercises, and illustrated by adequate figures! Chapter 3 presents the arithmetic of fuzzy sets: the extension principle, addition-subtraction-multiplication-division of fuzzy numbers and linguistic values. Chapter 4 advances with a large step further towards the mathematics of fuzzy sets, introducing basic operations on fuzzy sets (intersection operation -- logical product, union -- logical sum, compensatory operators), fuzzy relations, fuzzy implications types. Chapter 5 is devoted to introducing the fuzzy models, analyzing their structure, their main elements and operations, and examining the construction and features of the rule base, as well as various types of fuzzy models. Chapter 6 investigates three methods of fuzzy modeling: (a) fuzzy modeling based on the system expert's knowledge; (b) creation of self-tuning fuzzy models based on input/output measurement data of the system; (c) creation of self-organizing and self-tuning fuzzy models based on input/output measurement data of the system. Chapter 7 discusses comprehensively fuzzy control: static and dynamic fuzzy controllers, and the determination of structures and parameters for the fuzzy controllers. The final Chapter 8 analyzes advanced methods for the stability of fuzzy control systems. Section 8.1. deals with the fuzzy system stability in cases where plant models remain unknown, Section 8.2. considers the circle stability criterion, while Section 8.3. investigates the application of Popov's hyperstability theory to the analysis of fuzzy systems stability. A rich bibliography of 345 titles ends this most useful book.
