In this paper some useful properties of Legendre functions in an asymmetric interval (w.r.t. zero) with zero boundary values are obtained through variational methods. Some applications to the monotonicity and estimates of the first Dirichlet eigenvalue for moving bounds on \(S^2\) are also discussed.
