In the paper [Calc. Var. Partial Differ. Equ. 11, No. 4, 333-359 (2000; Zbl 0972.49024)], \textit{J. M. Ball}, \textit{B. Kirchheim} and \textit{J. Kristensen} proved that the quasiconvex envelope is a continuously differentiable function provided that the original function is upper semidifferentiable and satisfies some rather mild growth conditions. Now, the authors use this observation to show that the functions used in the characterization of the \(G\)-closure or the \(G_\theta\)-closure of sets of matrices are also continuously differentiable. Applications are found in the theory of optimal material layout.
