Using a mixed three-dimensional variational principle which is an extension of Hellinger-Prange-Reissner principle to piezoelectric bodies, the authors derive two-dimensional field equations, constitutive relations and boundary conditions for quasistatic deformations of anisotropic plate-like and rod-like bodies. The shear deformation and the change of thickness of the plate are accounted for. For the rod, the electric field is assumed to be uniform over the cross-section. The resulting set of equations is used to analyse: (i) cylindrical deformations of a transversely isotropic plate under different electromechanical boundary conditions (the bending rigidities of the plate are investigated as functions of the angle between the axis of transverse isotropy and the normal to the mid-surface of the plate); (ii) electromechanical deformations of a uniform circular cylindrical rod subjected to only electric charges at one end face, the other being rigidly clamped and kept at zero electric potential. Some numerical results and figures are presented.
