A prestressed thin shell consisting of linear elastic anisotropic layers is analyzed on the basis of a geometrically nonlinear shell theory, taking into account transverse shear and normal effects. The author focuses on two computational models for a shell of revolution: the nonlinear axisymmetric deformation of the prestressed shell, and the non-axisymmetric deformation due to a non-symmetric loading in addition to the axisymmetric one. These models are based on Newton-Raphson and incremental methods respectively. The instructive numerical examples include the nonlinear axisymmetric response of a cross-ply toroidal shell made of cord-rubber materials and subjected to inflation pressure, and the non-axisymmetric response of this shell subjected to inflation pressure and localized loading at the outer surface. The paper is therefore of special interest in the mechanics of tires.
