In order to account for the difference between yield failure limits in tension and compression, and for the sensitivity of grey cast iron to hydrostatic pressure, the authors propose a yield function identified from experimental data modelled by means of a hardening parameter occuring in modified plastic work. The non-associative flow rule is inaccurate, but the rules with plastic potential may give satisfactory results. The first invariant of stress tensor and the second invariant of stress deviator are considered. The authors derive the corresponding plastic potential and flow rule, and present a computer procedure. Assuming known principal stresses, the principal strains are computed in agreement with uniaxial and biaxial tests for tubular specimens. A special experimental method is used in order to identify the initial yielding. The theoretical analysis of yield and failure is illustrated by computed diagrams for stress and strain flows, and extend previously proposed formulations of others. An important contribution consists in the enlarged formulation of flow rules fitted for the gray cast iron.
