The authors prove: (1) A set of \(n\) points in the plane, not all collinear, determine at most \(n\) triangles of maximum area (or maximum perimeter); (2) A set of \(n\) points in the plane determine at most \(O(n^2)\) noncollinear triangles of maximum area. This bound is sharp. There is an excellent bibliography of 24 entries relating to these problems.
