Let \(X\) be a smooth toric variety, and let \({\mathcal D}\) denote the sheaf of differential operators on \(X\). The authors study \({\mathcal D}\)-modules on \(X\) in terms of the homogeneous coordinate ring \(S\) of \(X\). Recall that \(S\) is a polynomial ring in the variables \(T_D\), where \(D\) runs through the invariant prime divisors of \(X\). Moreover, \(S\) is graded by the class group \(\text{Cl}(X)\). Let \(b \subset S\) be the irrelevant ideal, and let \(A\) be the ring of differential operators on \(\text{Spec}(S)\). Then also \(A\) is \(\text{Cl}(X)\)-graded. The first main result states that the category of \({\mathcal D}\)-modules is equivalent to a certain full subcategory of the category of graded \(A\)-modules modulo \(b\)-torsion. This statement generalizes a known result on \({\mathcal D}\)-modules on projective spaces. -- In a second main theorem, the authors prove that the characteristic variety of a given coherent \({\mathcal D}\)-module is a geometric quotient of an open subset of the characteristic variety of the associated graded \(A\)-module.
