Assume that the pencil \((E,A)\) of real matrices is regular, of index at most \(1\), and asymptotically stable. Here, asymptotically stable has two alternative meanings: \(sE-A\) is regular for all complex numbers \(s\) with non-negative real part, or for all complex numbers \(s\) with \(|s|\geq 1\). For given matrices \(H_i\), \(i\in\{1,\dots,m\}\), and \(k\in\mathbb{R}^m\), the paper gives a sufficient condition for the pencil \((E,A+\varepsilon H)\) to be regular, of index at most \(1\), and asymptotically stable for all \(\varepsilon\in[0,1]\), where \(H=\sum_i k_i H_i\). That condition has the form of two linear inequalities in \(k\) with coefficients depending on the signs of the numbers \(k_i\), on the matrix measure of certain matrices, and on the supremum of the matrix measure of \((qE-A)^{-1}H_i\) for purely imaginary \(q\) and \(|q|=1\), respectively. The set of those \(k\) that fulfill that condition is not necessarily symmetric with respect to the origin.
