The category of spaces and proper maps is suitable in the study of noncompact spaces, but it has not enough limits and colimits for all homotopy constructions. In [\textit{J. M. García-Calcines, M. García-Pinillos} and \textit{L. J. Hernández-Paricio}, Bull. Aust. Math. Soc. 57, No. 2, 221-242 (1998; Zbl 0907.55017)], it was proposed to study the category of exterior spaces instead. An exterior space has a topology together with an externology, i.e., a neighbourhood system at infinity that has to be preserved under preimages of the maps in the category. This new category admits the structure of a closed simplicial model category. In the paper under review, the authors investigate various homology and cohomology theories on the category of exterior spaces, among them the sequential homology of the title. The role of CW-complexes is played by bicomplexes consisting of ordinary simple cells and of \(\mathbb{N}\)-cells of the form \(\mathbf{N}\times D^n\). The most important coefficient systems are \(\bigoplus _0^{\infty}\mathbf{Z}, \prod _0^{\infty}\mathbf{Z}\), and \(\bigoplus _0^{\infty}\mathbf{Z}/ \prod _0^{\infty}\mathbf{Z}\) regarded as modules over the ring \(\mathcal{R}\) of locally finite matrices over the integers.
