    The homological properties of a group are closely related to geometric and group-theoretic properties of it. A group is said to be of type \(FP_n\) over a commutative ring \(R\) if there is an \(RG\) projective resolution \(\cdots P_{n+1}\to P_n\to\cdots\to P_0\to R\to 0\), where the \(P_i\) are finitely generated for \(i=1,\dots,n\). The authors prove the following result: Proposition. Let \(G\) be a group of finite rational cohomological dimension \(n\), assume further that \(G\) is of type \(FP_n\) over the integers. Then there is a bound on the orders of finite subgroups of \(G\). This result extends one by \textit{P. H. Kropholler} [in J. Pure Appl. Algebra 90, No. 1, 55--67 (1993; Zbl 0816.20042)]. The authors use a version of Tate cohomology to obtain their result.
