Level spacing functions and connection formulas for Painlevé V transcendent (Q5940211)

The author applies the connection formulas for the fifth Painlevé transcendents to calculate the Fredholm determinant \(F(z,t)\) of the kernel \(K(x,y)\sin\pi(x-y)/(x-y)\) on the interval \((-t,t)\). The ODEs satisfied by the generating functions for the level spacing functions (that are expressed in terms of \(F(z,t)\)) are reduced to the fifth Painlevé equation by the Bäcklund transformation; the application of the isomonodromic deformation method then gives explicit connection formulas for the necessary Painlevé~V transcendent. Finally, the asymptotics of the latter and of the generating functions are obtained.
