    Let \(S\) be the class of univalent functions \(f(z)= z+ a_2z^2+ a_3z^3+\cdots\) on the unit disc \(D= \{z\in\mathbb{C}:|z|< 1\}\). Let \[ J_p(f)= \text{Re}(a_3+ \textstyle{{1\over 3}} (p-3) a^2_2)+ \textstyle{{1\over 3}} (p+1)|a_2|^2,\quad f\in S,\quad p\in \mathbb{R}. \] The authors study the problem of maximizing the functional \(J_p\) for an arbitrary fixed \(p\in \mathbb{R}\) over \(S\) by the use of Pontryagin's maximum principle applied to the Löwner equation. The final result is included in Theorem 1.2. The authors obtained also Theorem 4.3 on \(\max I^2_c(f)\), \(f\in S\), \(c\in\mathbb{R}\), where \(I^n_c(f)= \text{Re}(a_3- ca^2_2)+ c|a_2|^n\). The extremal problem: \(\max I^2_c(f)\), \(f\in S\), \(c\in\mathbb{R}\), has been studied by \textit{Z. J. Jakubowski} and \textit{K. Zyskowska} [Math. Bohem. 118, No. 3, 281-296 (1993; Zbl 0783.30015)]. They obtained the sharp upper bound for \(c\not\in({1\over 2}, 1)\) and a nonsharp -- for \(c\in ({1\over 2},1)\) by an application of the Landau-Valiron lemma (and also studied \(I^n_c(f)\), \(f\in S\), \(c\in\mathbb{R}\) for \(n= 1\), \(n= 3,4,\dots\)). The functional \(I^2_c(f)\) over the class \(S(M):= \{f\in S:|f(z)|< M, z\in D\}\), \(M> 1\), was studied in the paper [\textit{Z. J. Jakubowski} and \textit{K. Zyskowska}, Folia Sci. Univ. Techn. Resoviensis 103, Mat. Fiz. 16, Mat. 83-102 (1992; Zbl 0862.30013)]. The form of the functional \(I^2_c\) was suggested by Professor St. Ruscheweyh at the 10th Conference on Analytic Functions in Szczyrk (1990).
