Let \({\mathcal K}\) be the space of Cauchy transforms in the open unit disk \(\mathbb{D}\), that is the set of all functions \(f\) analytic in \(\mathbb{D}\) such that \[ f(z)= \int_T 1/(1- \overline\eta z) d\mu(\eta),\tag{\(*\)} \] where \(\mu\) is a complex Borel measure on the unit circle \(T= \{z\in \mathbb{C}:|z|= 1\}\). \({\mathcal K}\) becomes a Banach space under the norm \(\|f\|_{{\mathcal K}}= \inf\{\|\mu\|: \mu\text{ satisfies }(*)\}\). It is well known that \(H^1\subseteq{\mathcal K}\subseteq\bigcap_{0< p< 1} H^p\), where \(H^p\) are the usual Hardy spaces on the unit disk. Finally, let BMOA and VMOA be the spaces of analytic functions in \(\mathbb{D}\) of bounded, respectively vanishing mean-oscillation and let \[ {\mathcal D}= \Biggl\{f\in H^2:\|f\|^2_{{\mathcal D}}:=|f(0)|^2+ \iint_{\mathbb{D}}|f'(z)|^2 dx dy< \infty\Biggr\} \] be the Dirichlet space. The purpose of the paper is to study for analytic self-mappings \(\varphi\) of \(\mathbb{D}\) the composition operators \(C_\varphi: f\mapsto f\circ\varphi\) from \({\mathcal K}\) into \(H^p\), \((1\leq p<\infty)\), BMOA, VMOA or \({\mathcal D}\). The authors give necessary and sufficient conditions on the symbol \(\varphi\) for the operator \(C_\varphi\) to be bounded or compact. As a typical example we mention their result that \(C_\varphi:{\mathcal K}\to{\mathcal D}\) is compact if and only if the integral \(\iint_{\mathbb{D}} {|\varphi'(z)|^2\over |1- \overline\eta\varphi(z)|^4} dx dy\) is a continuous function of \(\eta\) for \(|\eta|= 1\). Composition operators acting on \({\mathcal K}\) itself, had been investigated, previously, by \textit{J. A. Cima} and \textit{A. Matheson} [Ill. J. Math. 4, No. 1, 58-69 (1998; Zbl 0914.30023)].
