Let \(p\) denote a prime number and let \({\mathcal C}_p(G)\) be the set of \(p\)-chief factors of a finite group \(G\). Then it is well known that \[ O_{p',p}(G)=F_p(G)=\bigcap\{C_G(F)\mid F\in{\mathcal C}_p(G)\}=\bigcap\{C_G(F)\mid F\in {\mathcal C}_p(G),\;F\text{ non-Frattini}\}. \] The authors consider now \[ F_{p^*}(G)=\bigcap\{I_G(F)\mid F\in{\mathcal C}_p(G)\}\text{ and }F_{p'}(G)=\bigcap\{I_G(F)\mid F\in{\mathcal C}_p(G),\;F \text{ non-Frattini}\}, \] where \(I_G(F)\) is the set of elements of \(G\) which induce an inner automorphism on \(F\). Note that in general \(F_{p^*}(G)\neq F_{p'}(G)\). The paper mainly deals with characterizations of \(p\)-constrainedness, and relations between \(F_{p^*}(G)\) and \(F_{p'}(G)\). For instance, the authors prove that \(G\) is \(p\)-constrained if and only if \(F_{p^*}(G)=F_p(G)\), or \(F_{p'}(G)=F_{p^*}(G)\) if and only if \(F_p(G)\) is the \(p\)-constrained radical of \(F_{p'}(G)\). As consequences they obtain results on Frattini \(p\)-chief factors with nonvanishing 1-cohomology.
