Let \(E\) and \(F\) be Banach spaces. The space of all continuous \(k\)-homogeneous polynomials from \(E\) into \(F\) is denoted by \({\mathcal P}(^kE,F)\) and \({\mathcal P}_{wb}(^kE,F)\) is the subspace of all polynomials which are weak-to-norm continuous on bounded sets. The authors show that if \(E\) has an unconditional finite dimensional expansion of the identity, i.e. there is a sequence \((A_n)\) of finite rank operators from \(E\) into \(E\) such that \(\sum A_nx\) tends unconditionally to \(x\) for all \(x \in E\), then the following assertions are equivalent: (a) \({\mathcal P}(^kE,F) = {\mathcal P}_{wb}(^kE,F)\); (b) \( {\mathcal P}_{wb}(^kE,F)\) contains no copy of \(c_0\); (c) \({\mathcal P}(^kE,F)\) contains no copy of \(\ell_{\infty}\); (d) \({\mathcal P}_{wb}(^kE,F)\) is complemented in \({\mathcal P}(^kE,F)\). This is a generalization of a result concerning linear operators due to \textit{N. J. Kalton} [ Math. Ann. 208, 267-278 (1974; Zbl 0273.47023)]. Using A. Pełczynski's property (V) [cf. \textit{A. Pełczynski}, Bull. Acad. Pol. Sci., Ser. Sci. Math. Astron. Phys. 10, 641-648 (1962; Zbl 0107.32504)], the authors show that if \(E\) has property (V) and \({\mathcal P}(^kE) = {\mathcal P}_{wb}(^kE)\) then every \(k\)-homogeneous unconditionally converging polynomial on \(E\) is weakly compact and the converse is also true if \(E\) has an unconditional finite dimensional expansion of the identity.
