It is well known that topological mappings can change the Hausdorff dimension in an arbitrary fashion. The author studies here this problem for the class of quasiconformal mappings of the Heisenberg group which has underlying space \(\mathbf R ^3\) but is equipped with a metric that is very different than the usual Euclidean metric. This makes the Hausdorff dimension of sets more complicated [cf. \textit{M. Gromov}, in ``Sub-Riemannian geometry'', A. Bellaiche and J.-J.Risler (eds.), Prog. Math. 144, 79-323 (1996; Zbl 0864.53025)]. The author constructs quasiconformal mappings on the Heisenberg group which change the Hausdorff dimension of Cantor-type sets in an arbitrary fashion. Examples of subsets of the Heisenberg group whose Hausdorff dimension cannot be lowered by any quasiconformal mapping are also given.
