The authors set up a model for the distribution of the heigh of intensive inner waves in which the essential part is the product \(AX\) of independent random variables \(A\) and \(X\). The distribution of both \(A\) and \(X\) can be approximated by either a Weibull distribution or a Pareto distribution, a fact that is deduced from extreme value theory. The authors therefore evaluate, or at least approximate the tail of each of the four variants for \(AX\). The model was used in a chi-square goodness of fit test for observations on the heights of inner waves at an Australian location. The fit turned out to be a good one.
