The paper deals with a preconditioned generalized minimal residual (GMRES) method for linear systems with dense, nonsymmetric matrices featuring off-diagonal areas of nonsmoothness. Discrete wavelet transforms with permutations are used in the design of preconditioners of bordered block matrix form combined with a detection algorithm to predict the positions of nonsmooth features. The performance of the suggested approach is studied extensively including the Caldéron-Zygmund matrix as a test case as well as dense matrices arising from the solution of elastohydrodynamic lubrication problems and boundary integral equations.
