A simple structural analysis method for DAEs (Q5942338)

A straightforward method for analyzing initial value problems for differential-algebraic equations in \(n\) dependent variables \(x_j=x_j(t)\) with \(t\) as a scalar independent variable of the form \(f_i(t,x_j\) and derivatives of them) \(=0\), \(1\leq i\leq n\), is considered. This method generalizes the method of \textit{C. C. Pantelides} [SIAM J. Sci. Stat. Comput. 9, No. 2, 213-231 (1988; Zbl 0643.65039)], but it is more directly informative and applies to DAEs with derivatives of any order. The method also provides data for index reduction in preparation for other methods to solve the initial value problem, such as Runge-Kutta or Gear.
