Two previous constructions of relative difference sets are similar and can be (partially) unified and generalized also obtaining new relative difference sets. Suppose that \(p=2\) or \(p=2^a-1\) is a Mersenne prime. The new construction gives a \(((p+1)p^{2n},p+1,(p+1)p^{2n},p^{2n})\)-relative difference set in a group \(K\times H\) where \(K\) is the direct product of two copies of the additive group of a (suitable) local principal ideal ring \(R\), \(H\) is an abelian (suitable) \(2\)- or \(3\)-group and \(U\subseteq H\) is an abelian elementary group. A part of the proof is inductive but the authors also give a more explicit description of the obtained situation and some useful examples.
