    Let \(T, S\) and \(B\) be linear (not necessarily bounded) operators between Banach spaces. Let \(\Omega\) be a subset of the semi-Fredholm domain of the family \(T-\lambda S\). The author gives necessary and sufficient conditions that a finite rank operator \(E\) exists with \(\min \operatorname {ind} (T- \lambda S - BE) = \min (\dim \ker T - \lambda S - BE)\), \(\operatorname {codim} \operatorname {ran}(T - \lambda S - BE) = 0\) for all \(\lambda \in \Omega\). If such \(E\) exists then \(\text{rank}(E) \geq M =\max \{\min \operatorname {ind} (T-aS): \lambda \in \Omega \}\) and the author shows that it is possible to find one with \(\text{rank}(E) \leq M + 1\). The author constructs an example which shows that \(M + 1\) is optimal in general, and he gives several sufficient conditions to find such an \(E\) with \(\text{rank}(E) = M\). The author applies these results to stabiliztion of infinite-dimensional dynamical systems in Hilbert spaces.
