This paper presents a semi-analytic solution of the problem associated with an elliptic inclusion in an infinite matrix for plane strain deformations. The bonding at the inclusion-matrix interface is homogeneously imperfect. The tractions are continuous, but the displacements are discontinuous across the interface. Using the complex variable techniques, the authors derive infinite series representations of the stress field. A detailed numerical analysis of the obtained results for different values of aspect ratio of inclusion shows how the peak interfacial stress and the average stress inside the inclusion vary with a representative parameter (stiffness of imperfect bond). The most significant result is that the peak stress along the interface is a nonmonotonic function of the interface stiffness. The specific values of the interface stiffness are determined at which the peak stress and the interfacial strain energy density along the inclusion-matrix interface have maximum.
