The paper under review in Banach space theory studies composition ideals of homogeneous polynomials on Banach or quasi-Banach spaces, with minimal ideals in its focus. The definition of an ideal of homogeneous scalar-valued polynomials of degree \(n\) is fashioned after the manner of the very fruitful functorial-style definition of operator ideals by Pietsch: there are some natural requirements about compositions and metrics. The minimal kernel of a \(p\)-Banach ideal of homogeneous polynomials is obtained by composing the ideal with the operator ideal of approximable linear operators (i.e., norm limits of finite-rank operators). Then an ideal is called minimal if it equals its minimal kernel. An important example of the notion of minimal ideal in this sense is the ideal of \(p\)-nuclear polynomials of a given degree. The main result appears to be a natural characterization in 3.4 of the minimal kernel of a \(\lambda\)-ideal as being the smallest \(\mu\)-Banach ideal that agrees on the finite-dimensional spaces with the given \(\lambda\)-ideal. One can phrase this also in terms of finite-rank polynomials and metrics on tensor products, at least for Banach spaces whose dual has some form of the approximation property. The paper ends with a treatment of ideals of vector-valued polynomials. The techniques involve \(\ell_p\)-sums, nuclearity, and metric tensor products. The style is mostly algebraic with a heavy load of notation and terminology. The paper is well readable, and may serve as a building block in the emerging theory of polynomial composition ideals.
