An operator \(A\) on an infinite-dimensional Hilbert space \(H\) is said to satisfy Bishop's condition \((\beta)\) if for each open subset \(F\) of the complex plane and each sequence \((f_n)\) of \(H\)-valued analytic functions on \(F\), compact convergence of \(((.-A)f_n)\) to \(0\) implies compact convergence to \(0\) of \((f_n)\). If available this is useful in the investigation of spectral questions. It is shown that any \(p\)-hyponormal operator -- i.e. any operator with \(|A^*|^{2p}\leq|A|^{2p}\) for a \(p\in (0,1]\) -- has this property.
