The paper deals with membrane models which are obtained from formal asymptotic analysis of a three-dimensional geometrically exact nonlinear model of thin elastic shells whose material is physically linear. The author derives the equations of equilibrium of membranes, formulates the corresponding boundary value problems for them, and discusses the problem when the ''classical'' linear limiting membrane model can be obtained in this way.
