The authors consider maximal operators of the form \[ Mf(x) = \sup_{t > 0} \int_S f(x + tw) dw \] where \(S\) is a convex hypersurface of finite type (every tangent line has a finite order of contact). They formulate a natural (but slightly technical) conjecture for the range of \(p\) for which \(M\) is bounded (depending on the multitype of \(S\) at each point on \(S\), in a Newton polytope-like definition). The conjecture is essentially equivalent to the integrability of \(\text{dist}(x,P)^{-1/p}\) on \(S\) for every tangent plane \(P\) to \(S\). They verify this conjecture in three dimensions. They also prove a related \(L^p\) smoothing estimate for convolution with surface measure on \(S\).
