Let \(\varphi(n)\) denote the Euler function. The author proves the asymptotic formula \[ \sum_{n\leq x}{\varphi(n) \over\varphi \bigl(\varphi(n) \bigr)}\sim e^\gamma x\log_3 x,\quad \text{as }x\to \infty \] and gives analogous results, where the general term in the sum is replaced by \({\varphi\bigl( \varphi(n) \bigr)\over \varphi(n)}\) resp. \(\log{\varphi (n)\over \varphi\bigl( \varphi(n)\bigr)}\). The proofs are elementary.
