Let \((\mathcal M^{n},g)\) be a compact real analytic Riemannian manifold. A Grauert tube of radius \(s\) associated with \(\mathcal M^{n}\) is a totally real embedding of \(\mathcal M^{n}\) into a complex manifold \(\mathcal X^{n}\) together with a non-negative strictly plurisubharmonic exhaustion \(\nu: \mathcal X^{n}\to[0,\epsilon)\) invariant under the complex conjugation about \(\mathcal M^n\) and with \(\nu^{-1}(0)=\mathcal M^n\), such that \(\mathcal X^n=\{\nu<s^{2}\}\), the Monge-Ampère equation \((\partial \overline{\partial} \sqrt{\nu})^{n}=0\) holds on \(\mathcal X^n-\mathcal M^n\), and \(g\) is the metric induced on \(\mathcal M^n\) by the Kähler metric associated with \(\sqrt{-1}\partial\overline{\partial}\nu/2\). It is known that every compact real analytic Riemannian manifold can be embedded in a Grauert tube. Now let \(G\) be a compact Lie group of isometries acting freely on a real analytic Riemannian manifold \((\mathcal M, g)\) in such a way that the quotient, \(\mathcal B\colon = \mathcal M/G\), is a manifold endowed with the Riemannian submersion metric. The \(G\)-action lifts to an action on \(T\mathcal M\) with moment map \(\Psi\) for the symplectic structure on \(T\mathcal M\). Let \(T^{s} \mathcal M\) be the set of vectors of length less than \(s\), \(0<s\leq\infty\). If the adapted complex structure exists on \(T^{s} \mathcal M\), then it can be pushed down to an integrable complex structure on the symplectic reduction \((\Psi^{-1}(0)\cap T^{s}\mathcal M)/G\) of \(T^{s}\mathcal M\). In this paper, the author proves that the Grauert tube \((T^s\mathcal B,J_{\mathcal B})\), equipped with the adapted complex structure \(J_{\mathcal B}\) for the Riemannian submersion metric on \(\mathcal B\), is biholomorphic to the symplectic reduction \(((\Psi^{-1}(0)\cap T^{s}\mathcal M)/G, \widetilde J)\) of \(T^{s}\mathcal M\) with the adapted complex structure \(\widetilde J\). The author presents many interesting new examples of manifolds whose tangent bundles admit global adapted complex structures by applying this construction when \(s=\infty\). The exotic 7-sphere with the Gromoll-Meyer metric, certain strongly inhomogeneous manifolds, and \(\mathbb{C}\mathbb{P}^n \#(-\mathbb{C}\mathbb{P}^{n})\) all have this property. By the extension of the \(G\)-action to a holomorphic action of \(G_\mathbb{C}\) on \(T\mathcal M\) the author shows that the tube \((T^s\mathcal B,J_{\mathcal B})\) is biholomorphic to the complex manifold \(T\mathcal M/G_\mathbb{C}\) with the global adapted complex structure \(J\). Furthermore the author introduces the notion of the effective rank of a geodesic which describes the degeneration of the adapted complex structure at infinity along a leaf of the Riemannian foliation and shows that the effective rank is greater than or equal to the usual rank of a geodesic. The effective rank of a compact Riemannian symmetric space is equal to the usual rank and the adapted complex structure at infinity induces a geodesic flow invariant CR structure on the unit tangent bundle of a symmetric space of rank one but not in higher rank cases.
