The authors study the structure of the set of solutions for Riemann problems to a \(2\times 2\) system of conservation laws. They organize Riemann solutions into strata of successively higher codimension. The codimension-zero stratum consists of structurally stable Riemann solutions and the most of its boundary is constituted by codimension-one Riemann solutions which violate structural stability in a minimal way. The authors give an overview of the phenomena leading to different kinds of codimension-one Riemann solutions and classify these solutions according to their geometric properties, their roles in solving of the Riemann problem, and their connection to wave curves.
