This paper is concerned with the dynamics of three competitive species. The mathematical model consists of three partial differential equations of Lotka-Volterra type. It is shown that, for a class of biologically reasonable initial conditions, the evolution of the system first leads to a succession of travelling diffusive waves and then to the formation of chaotic spatio-temporal pattern. The properties of the system are investigated both numerically and analytically.
