Let \((X,\rho)\) and \((Y,d)\) be metric spaces with the fixed point property for nonexpansive mappings and let \(T\colon X\times Y\to X\times Y\) be nonexpansive relatively to the metric \(d_\infty((x,u),(y,v))=\max\{\rho(x,y),d(u,v)\}\) for \((x,u),(y,v)\in X\times Y\). In a natural way, the following problem arises: does \(T\) necessarily have a fixed point? The authors give a positive answer to this question for mappings \(T\) satisfying various contractive conditions. In the last part of the paper an approximate fixed point theorem for nonexpansive mappings in a certain product space \((K\times M)_\infty\) is proved. Here \(M\) is a metric space which has the approximate fixed point property for nonexpansive mappings and \(K\) is a bounded closed convex subset of a Banach space.
