The author proposes a parameter-fitting procedure for finding a compactly supported spherically symmetric potential from fixed-energy phase shifts. This problem is of interest to physicists dealing with scattering at not very high energies. The author writes a functional which should be minimized in order to estimate the potential, given its fixed-energy phase-shifts. An efficient minimization method for global minimization of this functional is proposed and tested numerically. The method is shown to be very efficient in the examples presented by the author. This method has been efficient in other problems of interest in various applications [e.g., \textit{S. Gutman}, J. Comput. Phys. 163, 529-546 (2000; Zbl 1082.78504)]. In recent papers by \textit{A. G. Ramm} and \textit{W. Scheid} [J. Inverse Ill-Posed Probl. 7, 561-571 (1999; Zbl 0938.35199)], a different approximate method for solving the same problem is proposed, and numerically tested in \textit{A. G. Ramm} and \textit{A. B. Smirnova} [J. Inverse Ill-Posed Probl. 8, 307-322 (2000; Zbl 0988.34066)]. In the paper [\textit{S. Gutman, A. G. Ramm} and \textit{W. Scheid}, J. Inverse Ill-Posed Probl. 10, 487-502 (2002; Zbl 1023.35094)], a new concept, the stability index, is introduced and applied to an inversion method for solving the problem of inversion of fixed-energy phase shifts.
