The authors study eigenvalues and spectral singularities for the ODE \(y''+(\lambda-p(x))^2y=0\) on the real line with \(p\) complex-valued, in \(C^1\) and vanishing at infinity with a mild decay condition. (In nonnormal problems, spectral singularities are points in the continuous spectrum that are not embedded eigenvalues, but affect the spectral decomposition in a similar way). They show that the eigenvalues form a bounded countable set, accumulating only on the real axis, and that the spectral singularities form a compact null set. Under an exponential decay assumption for \(p'\), both sets are finite.
