The main result of the paper under review is the following theorem. Let \(G\) be a Lie group and let \(M\) be a proper locally linear \(G\)-manifold. Then \(M\) has the \(G\)-homotopy type of a \(G\)-CW-complex. This result improves on the main result of the author's thesis [Ann. Acad. Sci. Fenn., Ser. A I, Diss. 108 (1996; Zbl 0902.57031)] where there were two additional hypotheses, namely that \(G\) be linear and that the action has only a finite number of orbit types. The main new feature which allows for this generalization is a \(G\)-equivariant closed embedding into a Banach \(G\)-space, replacing one into a finite dimensional representation space of \(G\) in the earlier paper. The following technical notions play an essential role in the paper: tubular numerable \(G\)-coverings and \(G\)-nerves.
